Provisions Available to Students with Dyslexia in
Maharashtra
For SSC & HSC:
Dyslexic students have been granted the following
provisions by the Maharashtra Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary
Education:
•Extra time - 30 minutes for SSC & 1 hr. for HSC
Students.
•Exemption from third language (Hindi / Marathi)
for SSC students. Students may
•take a vocational subject instead. HSC students
may take a vocational subject instead of the second language.
•Exemption from paper II in Mathematics (Algebra
& Geometry) for SSC students.
•Students may take a vocational subject of 75 marks in
lieu of Mathematics Paper II.
•Use of a writer as per the rules of the board.
How to apply for provisions –
•A Certificate is required from the Govt. Surgeon
General in Mumbai.
•Certificate can be obtained from the LD Clinic
of LTMG Hospital, Sion.
•Applications along with the certificate must
reach the Board by January.
•For students of standard V TO IX, the school may
apply to the Deputy Director of Education through the Divisional Inspector.
•These provisions have been offered since 1996, when the
first batch of 13 dyslexic students appeared for the SSC (Std X) exams. In
2001, the state government passed a Government Resolution formalizing these
provisions.
•Similar provisions are available at the school level, for
students from Std. I to IX. Schools are required to forward the relevant
documentation to the Ward Education Officer at the local Municipal
Department, to get the approval of the Dy. Director of Education (Secondary
Schools). Schools that do not prepare students for the State Board
examinations are also covered (i.e. ICSE and CBSE schools).
•A recent circular from the Dy. Director of Higher and
Technical Education extends these provisions to Technical Institutions,
Non-agricultural and Agricultural Universities, effectively covering
students in under-and post-graduate courses. The modalities still need to be
clarified.
•As a safeguard against fraudulent practices, the
certificates are signed only by Head of Department, Dr. Madhuri Kulkarni,
who is well-regarded by all concerned parties.
•A committee comprising the Secretary (Education), Heads
of State Education Departments, the SCERT, the SSC/HSC Examination Board and
the MDA meets twice a year to monitor and formulate guidelines for the
implementation of these provisions.
•Although the legislation exists, these provisions are not
yet accessible to students outside Mumbai city, as the other State
Examination Boards have not yet put in place a procedure to extend them.
Provisions offered by ICSE Board:
•The ICSE Board selectively grants the following
provisions as per the specific needs of individual students:
•Extra time - 15 minute/per hour or 25% of total
time extra.
•Exemption from 2nd language: student need not
take another subject in lieu.
•Use of calculator in some cases for mathematics.
•Question Paper will be read out to the student.
•Use of a writer, if required, as per the rules.
How to apply for provisions –
The School Principal should forward a detailed Psycho
educational assessment by a recognized Professional or institution to the ICSE Board, specifying the area of difficulty and the type of support
required for the candidate to satisfactorily complete exam papers.
CBSE Board:
•Dyslexic students have been granted the following provisions by the CBSE
Board:
•Use of a writer as per the rules of the board.
•Additional 1 hour for each paper.
•One compulsory language as against 2 in addition
to any 4 of the following subjects:
Mathematics, Science, Social Science, another language,
Music, Painting and Home Science.
How to apply for provisions –
Head of the Institution needs to issue a certificate of school based
evaluation covering the past 10 years' academic record. |
