Being parents of a child with Learning Disabilities is a very worrying and confusing situation. There are so many questions that a parent mulls over constantly: "How can I best help my child to face the pressures of an unsympathetic school environment?" "What kind of learning programme would best suit my child's special needs?" "How do I build up my child's confidence?" Unfortunately, despite their parents' best efforts, youngsters are often caught in a relentless cycle of failure, frustration and low self-esteem that leaves parents feeling helpless, angry and isolated.

A Parent Support Group can offer realistic solutions to many of these questions. When families with the same concerns meet, it can provide mutually beneficial information exchanges and emotional support. There is a sense of community, of belonging to a group of like-minded individuals, a place to openly talk about problems, and form new friendships. Parents can help each other to "renew their spirit, determination, and enthusiasm for life," (Ripley, 1993), thus moving towards a better quality of life for all concerned.

MDA aims to provide parents with a platform to voice their concerns and problems, and to seek realistic, effective solutions for the same. Towards this end, our Parents' Support Group meets once a month to discuss the issues that are uppermost in parents' minds, and to share experiences that everyone can learn from.
