Creating a Thinking Classroom Students enter school with vivid imaginations, an innate ability to problem solve and a love of hands-on investigative learning. The pressures of our 'high stakes' examination system leave little room for these innate skills to flower. As a result, employers often complain that graduates have the knowledge but are unable to apply it and do not have the skills required for the workplace. These two workshops will look at how teachers can develop a thinking classroom where creativity and knowledge are not mutually exclusive but complement and enhance one another, and independent thinking is an integral part of the curriculum. Miss Joy Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Destiny Education graduated with a BEd (Hons) from King Alfred's College (University of Southampton), one of the top teacher training colleges in the UK. She has many years of experience teaching in UK primary schools, with a variety of age groups, where her specialist co-ordinator responsibilities included science and design and technology, as well as music. Her passion for seeing every child reach their potential led her to teach in a special school for students with emotional and behavioural difficulties, a challenging and rewarding experience that inspired her co-found Destiny Education in 2001. She and her colleagues travel extensively across India conducting training workshops for teachers, Principals and management, as well as designing curricula and teaching aids to enable interactive, multi-sensory learning. She is currently involved in the research and development of Thinking Skills in the Classroom.
