presents READ 2012 An International Three Day Training Workshop on Teaching Reading to All Children About The Programme Reading fluently underpins all academic activity and is the strongest predictor of academic success for most students. Children learn to read through the Primary years and subsequently read to access information on science, social studies, economics etc. Yet, Primary School teachers receive little training in the teaching of reading and there are few, if any, courses at the University level to train reading specialists or reading instructors. Following the overwhelming response to READ 2011, this workshop will cover the basics of reading instruction, providing successful strategies as well as hands-on experiences for the explicit and systematic teaching of reading, both decoding and comprehension and spelling through the Primary years. Who Should Attend • Pre-Primary, Primary and Language Arts Teachers • Pre-Primary and Primary School Heads • Special Educators and Remedial Teachers • Teacher Trainers and Curriculum Development Specialists The Faculty R. Malatesha Joshi, Ph.D., is Professor of Reading/Language Arts Education, ESL and Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University and visiting faculty at the TAMU-QU Collaborative Programme at the University of Qatar, Doha. Dr. Joshi is the founding Editor of Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, rated one of the top ten journals in education and educational research, as also of Literacy Studies: Perspectives from Cognitive Neurosciences, Linguistics, Psychology and Education. He has authored and co-authored numerous books on literacy acquisition and instruction including Becoming a Professional Reading Teacher, sits on the editorial boards of several professional journals. Suzanne Carreker, Ph.D., CALT-QI is Vice-President of Research and Programme Development at Neuhaus Education Centre, Houston. She has published and presented widely and is best known for her work on developing instructional materials to teach various components of literacy acquisition. Projected Outcomes Participants will gain insight into how children learn to read and why some have more difficulty than others in acquiring the requisite skills. Participants will be exposed to successful strategies as well as hands-on experiences for the explicit and systematic teaching of reading, both decoding and comprehension, and spelling through the Primary years. Opportunities to develop materials suitable for different grade levels as well as use of first language in teaching literacy skills in English will also be provided. Participants are also encouraged to present their work as an interactive/poster presentation during lunch time. What They Wrote About READ 2011
To add on qualitative input from the speakers to my limited knowledge of language
teaching was my main goal in participating in this event and I must state that I am
leaving connected to a cause and enriched...Keep up the Good work!
The most significant learning/discovery for me at the conference was
the importance of knowledge of phonological awareness for teacher
trainers to produce teachers who can be good language teachers!
The different strategies for decoding and comprehension were a real discovery.
